The language of Catalonia is Catalan, which is the historical language of the territory.

What is Intercat?

Intercat is a collection of electronic resources in a web environment: teaching material, sociolinguistic documentation, information on language volunteering, etc. aimed at providing an introduction to Catalan language and culture. It is aimed specifically at students visiting the universities in Catalonia as part of mobility programmes.

It has three different sections:

  • I'm learning Catalan: tools for the independent study of the Catalan language (Speakcat, university conversation guides, Sisplau...).
  • Sign me up!: information and activities linked to the linguistic and cultural welcome programmes for foreign students (language exchanges, 80 tips, Ajuda'm, Activa't...).
  • I live in Catalonia: documentation with information on the Catalan identity and the Catalan university setting (Catalan in Catalonia, Catalan at University, Lingcat, Barcelona Youth).

This multimedia platform was set up in 1999 as an initiative of the language services of nine Catalan universities along with the Language Policy Office. It is co-financed by the European Union, the Ministry of Universities, Research and the Information Society and the Catalan public universities. As of 2007 the updating and maintenance of the Intercat portal has been the responsibility of the Commission for Universities and Research of the Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise.

"Because I wanted to learn about Catalan culture, the people and everyday life. Barcelona is a very interesting city because it has its own language, a language that identifies the people from here. I like learning new languages."
