Catalan is a Romanesque language, that is, it belongs to the group of languages that developed from Latin.

Experiences

"I enrolled for the Catalan course because I wanted to learn the language of Catalonia. I can also do a Catalan course when I go back to England, in the last year of my degree, and I wanted to know a little bit before I started."

Accessibility

We have updated the Intercat website in order to make it more accessible, in line with the recommendations adopted by the World Wide Web Consortium - W3C for the removal of obstacles that prevent any individual from exercising their right to access information and communication.

Accessibility guidelines

  • Use of XHTML code, which means that standard documents can be created within a clear structure.
  • Positioning of content using CSS, without tables. Semantic structure of the code. Screen readers for visually impaired and blind users read the document in a logical order.
  • Type size and colours can be changed using the browser tools in order to adapt them for users with visual problems.
  • Alternative descriptions for images.
  • The use of JavaScript is an option, not a requirement. An alternative is always offered for users who have deactivated JavaScript or who have older versions that do not support DOM.

The improvements in accessibility that have been implemented are explained below.

How to browse without using the mouse. Keyboard shortcuts

A series of key combinations has been devised to make browsing through the most common content easier without having to use the mouse. Speed, convenience and accessibility for the visually impaired or those with motor difficulties are some of the advantages of these keyboard commands.

The options defined are combined with other keys depending on the browser:

  • 0: Access to the page on accessibility
  • 1: Access to the home page
  • 2: Direct access to the content of the page
  • 5: Access to the site map
  • 9: Access to the contact page

All of the pages have links rel=previous, next, up, and home to make browsing easier in text-only browsers. Users of Netscape 6 and Mozilla can also take advantage of this characteristic by selecting in the menu "View", "Show/hide", "Navigation toolbar", "Show when required" o "Show always".

Links

To allow users to scan the links on the page, we have tried to ensure that the links make sense out of context.

Links to new windows have been restricted to external links and links to documents. These links are indicated with "Opens link in a new window". Links marked like this will open in a new window if JavaScript is activated. If not, the link will open in the same window.

Visual design

This website has several style sheets so that users can select the colour combination that they prefer and the size of text and arrangement on the screen that is most suitable for their vision.

Remember that the size of the type can be modified using the "View" menu, in the option "Text size". It can also be changed from this preferences page:

If you use Opera or Firefox you will find alternative colour combinations in the "View" menu in the "Page style" option. If not, you can activate these style sheets using the links below:

If you have visual field problems, you can choose to view the website in a single column:
